A Message About Auditions

Selection for next year’s repertory productions classes is one of the hardest parts of what we do, and not because of talent.

Not getting your first choice is not a statement about your value as a person. It is not proof that someone else is “better” than you. It is not evidence that you aren’t talented, capable, or important to this program.

These auditions and interviews were not for a specific show. They were an opportunity for me to learn more about each of you as performers, collaborators, and artists so that I can build repertory classes that will challenge, support, and help you grow. My job is not to rank people. My job is to create ensembles where students can be successful and continue developing their skills.

I know disappointment can still hurt. If you’re upset, that’s okay. It means you cared. Take a day or two. Be frustrated. Be sad. Talk to your friends. Then come back ready to work.

If you want to meet with me, I am always happy to talk. But the most productive conversations are not, “Why wasn’t I placed in that class?” or “Why was someone else selected?” Those questions rarely help you grow as an artist.

Instead, ask:

  • What am I doing well?

  • What strengths did you see in my audition or interview?

  • What would be good for me to work on before next year?

  • What can I do to continue growing?

Those conversations lead somewhere.

I am incredibly excited about the year ahead! The people in this room are talented, kind, creative, funny, and full of potential. The success of next year will not be determined by who was placed in a particular class today. It will be determined by what we build together from this moment forward.

he best artists are the ones who keep showing up, keep learning, keep growing, and keep creating.

Remember that you are enough. Hold your head high, and give yourself some applause. Today is tough as I had to say goodbye to an awesome group of senior people. However, I am also ridiculously excited when I look at the potential in all of the classes for next year!

I believe deeply in every student in this program, and I cannot wait to see what each of you accomplishes next year. You are remarkable artists and people, and I know that together we are going to create something truly special. It is going to be an amazing year!!!!!
